MTD, without having to work it all out alone.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax changes how many sole traders and landlords keep records and report their income to HMRC. We are already helping clients who are using MTD, including people with property income.

If you have received an HMRC letter, need somebody to help file your quarterly updates, or want to get ready before your start date, we can help you understand the next step. We work with your records, your software and the amount of support you need.

Digital records. Quarterly updates. A completed tax return.

  • Check whether MTD for Income Tax applies and when you need to start.
  • Help with signing up and the agent authorisation needed for the agreed work.
  • Choose a suitable record-keeping approach and compatible software.
  • Organise self-employment income, rental income and expenses.
  • Prepare and submit quarterly updates, with the right information from you.
  • Review the year-end position and complete the annual tax return.
  • Support with landlord accounts, property expenses and Self Assessment.

We can also discuss bookkeeping and MTD for VAT. Income Tax and VAT have different requirements, so we will check which rules affect you.

WHAT CHANGES / INCOME TAX

When do the MTD rules apply?

Under current HMRC guidance, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 in 2024–25 should have started from 6 April 2026. The threshold is over £30,000 in 2025–26 for a 6 April 2027 start, and over £20,000 in 2026–27 for a 6 April 2028 start.

Qualifying income generally means your gross self-employment and property income combined, before expenses. It is not simply your profit. Exemptions and individual circumstances can affect the position.

Landlord tax support that fits your property business.

From one rental property to a growing portfolio, we can help you keep income and expenditure organised and understand the information needed for your tax filings. Tell us about joint ownership, any other business income and your current records so we can plan the work properly.

We will check that your software and subscription support the filings you need. If your records need improving first, our bookkeeping and software team can help.

Your MTD questions.

Are the new quarterly returns full tax returns?

HMRC calls them quarterly updates: summaries of income and expenses from your digital records. You still need to complete an annual tax return. We can help with both stages.

When are quarterly updates due?

The regular deadlines are 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. Your update period and software settings need to be correct. We can help you put a timetable in place.

Can you help if I have fallen behind?

Contact us with the HMRC notice, the periods outstanding and the records you have. We can review the position, discuss missing information and agree a way forward.

Do I need to pay tax every quarter?

Quarterly reporting does not itself mean quarterly tax payments. Your tax payment obligations depend on the rules that apply to you, including any payments on account. We can explain your own timetable.
